Volunteering With Us
Do you love baking and decorating cakes? Do you want to help your local community?
Please read on...
Free Cakes for Kids - Daventry and Rugby is always on the look-out for fantastically lovely bakers and cake decorators to join our team. If you fancy yourself the next Mary Berry or Paul Hollywood (and no I will not update that line-up #MaryBerryforQueen #HollywoodTheSnake) or simply love filling your kitchen with scrumptious home-made cake smell from time to time, all alongside doing a little something to brighten up someone's day, then we'd love to have you on board!
What do I have to do?
Get in touch and we'll send you some further information and forms to fill in. On completion of the application process, we will add you to our network of bakers. When a request for a cake is received, an e-mail is sent to the team of volunteer bakers with details of the referral. If you would like to make the cake you simply e-mail back and if no-one else has offered we will be in touch to organise the collection or delivery of the cake.
Do I have to commit to making a certain number of cakes?
No. You might make one cake a year, you might make one a month, it really is up to you. Becoming a volunteer baker is flexible, you can fit it around your commitments and bake when you have the time. As we're just starting off We also find that cake referrals are like buses, there won't be any for a while, and then suddenly we'll have three in a day, so the amount of cakes that are needed also varies.
Do I have to be an expert baker?
No. The aim of Free Cakes for Kids is to help families who find it difficult to provide a homemade birthday cake for a child. For many of these children receiving a homemade birthday cake, perhaps with their name on it or in the shape of something they really like, will make a real difference. There are no expectations that cakes look professional or ‘shop bought’. If you want to go the extra mile then that's always ace and if you want a little guidance on how you could possibly make your masterpiece that teensy bit more special, we'll happily provide you with some tips and tricks.
Who covers the costs of the ingredients?
Volunteer bakers are expected to cover the costs of their ingredients. The cakes don't need to be towering showstoppers, a simple Victoria Sponge or cake mix creation can really make a difference. No need to sweep the home-baking shelves at the supermarket!
How will the cake be delivered?
This will vary with each referral and we try to be as flexible as possible, for both the bakers and the organisation that has made the referral. Sometimes the cake will be collected from you by the group co-ordinator who will then deliver the cake onwards. Or you may be asked to deliver the cake to a public location, or to the group co-ordinator. If this is ever a problem alternative arrangements can be made.
How do I apply to become a volunteer baker?
Contact the group co-ordinator, whose details can be found here. We look forward to hearing from you!

But still want to lend a hand?

Baking not your thing?
But still want to lend a hand?
You may be able to help in other ways:
- Cake deliveries - sometimes we need help with the logistics of getting the cakes to the right places
- Fundraising - we are looking at holding charity coffee mornings or perhaps holding cake sales to go towards community events or supply costs (cake boards/boxes etc.)
- Spreading the word - check us out on social media and let people know what we do!
